“Translation for Automatic Teller Machine and workers compensation for stress-related disease for foreigners are necessary”
The ambassador Lakshitha Ratnayake who came to Korea only 5 months ago, is considered to have quickly adapted to the Korean life with vigor and moxie. He said “Sri Lankans started coming to Korea 6 years ago and about 19,000 Sri Lankans live in Incheon, Ansan, Daegu, Pusan, and Guhjaedo. 70% of them are male workers, 30% are female workers, about 100 are Sri Lankan international students, and about 30 Sri Lankan women are married to Koreans.” Sri Lankan women strongly believe to marry Sri Lankan men and are considered to be diligent.
Lakshitha Ratnayake even works on Saturday to console the loneliness of tired Sri Lankan workers who work all seven days. The embassy staff visit those workers who cannot visit the embassy.
“Korea is an economically advanced country with excellent agricultural products, high-standard of living, and impressive obedience to the law,” he said. “That workers do not get paid on time and work without break should be improved,” he pointed out. Saying that because of long labor without break, two people who suffered stress, returned to Sri Lanka and he expressed his wish for insurance coverage for his people. He also advised that if there is a straight pathway between Korea and Sri Lanka, the productivity will be improved because the workers’ family and their lovers can easily be invited. “Currently, Korea Exchange Bank is the only one providing translations regarding cash withdrawal and remitting money, so many foreigners are suffering difficulty in emergency.” Said he, expressed his wish for other banks to provide automatic translating machine for foreigners.
Mentioning about multiculture in Korea, Ambassador Lakshitha Ratnayake said “the future of Korea is bright due to social welfare, especially advanced welfare for the workers,” and “I ask that Korean authority a favor that Sri Lankans can easily settle down in Korea”
